Amadeus vs Skyscanner API for Flight Search
Skyscanner fits flight comparison apps that send travelers elsewhere to book. Amadeus is worth evaluating when flight search is part of a broader travel or booking product and you can arrange Enterprise access. For a small app that just needs fares, neither is an automatic starting point: check access before you spend time on the integration.
Amadeus API vs Skyscanner API: what changes for developers?
First, check which Amadeus product a comparison is talking about. The current Amadeus developer portal says its Self-Service portal has been decommissioned and now directs developers to Enterprise APIs. Older tutorials about signing up for a Self-Service key are not a current access guide. Existing integrations can start with our Self-Service migration guide.
Access: Amadeus asks you to request Enterprise access and choose the APIs with its team. Skyscanner's application criteria list 100,000 monthly active users as a minimum, with approval decided case by case. Neither public documentation nor audience size alone guarantees a production key.
Search and booking: Skyscanner's live search flow creates a session, then polls for more results. Travelers follow a link to an airline or agency to buy. With Amadeus, agree on the search, booking, and ticketing services your business needs; its travel platform covers selling and servicing bookings as well as search. Don't assume access to one search API includes all of that.
Scheduled fare checks: Skyscanner's Live Pricing rules require user-initiated requests, so a background price tracker does not fit that documented use. For Amadeus Enterprise, confirm monitoring and data-storage rights in your agreement. Ignav supports scheduled checks; its price tracker guide shows how to handle saved prices and changing fares.
Coverage and cost: Test the routes, airlines, markets, and baggage details your users need. Results from one API do not promise the same fares from another. Get commercial terms for your intended use, including search volume and what happens after a traveler chooses a flight. A search price is not a reserved seat.
How the other flight APIs fit
| API | Best fit | Core workflow | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amadeus Enterprise | Travel businesses needing a broader API catalog | Discuss access and select the APIs your product needs | Enterprise access is on request; the Self-Service portal has closed |
| Skyscanner | Approved flight comparison and affiliate products | Create a live search, poll for results, link out to book | 100,000 MAU minimum; user-initiated live searches |
| Aviasales / Travelpayouts | Travel content and affiliate flight comparison | Use cached Data API prices or apply for live Search API | Live Search requires 50,000 MAU and user action |
| Ignav | Self-serve fare search and scheduled price checks | Search fares, then resolve an itinerary to booking links | No commissions, ticketing, checkout, or order management |
| Duffel | Apps that create and manage flight orders | Search offers, select one, then create an order | You own checkout, traveler, payment, and order flows |
| SerpApi | Products that specifically need Google Flights extraction | Run its Google Flights engine and consume structured results | It is an extraction workflow, not order management |
Choose by workflow
- Choose Duffel when your product needs to create and manage bookings. Its first-party guide moves from an offer request to selecting an offer and creating an order.
- Choose SerpApi when Google Flights itself is the required source experience. Its documented product extracts Google Flights results into structured output.
- Choose Aviasales through Travelpayouts when you want an affiliate product. Its cached Data API and live Search API serve different purposes; see the access and usage comparison before choosing one. Live Search requires at least 50,000 monthly active users and is not for automated fare collection.
- Choose Ignav when you need self-serve fare search and booking links, and sending the traveler elsewhere to buy is enough. Ignav does not pay affiliate commissions, sell or issue tickets, collect payment, create orders, manage bookings, or handle traveler changes.
With Ignav, verify your email to get an API key, search fares, then request booking links for a selected itinerary. Links can be unavailable or open a search page where the traveler needs to select the flight. You can test without an account in the playground, or follow the quickstart.
